Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia
By: robertpalmer
Chronic myelogenous leukemia is a form of leukemia where there is an increases number of myeloid cells in the bone marrow of those infected. It can be very dangerous and even lethal if not diagnosed and treated properly. Methods of treatment include chemotherapy, interferon, or a replacement of bone marrow. Symptoms of the disease include a general state of discomfort for extended periods of time, low fevers, as well as an elevated susceptibility to diseases. For treatment to be successful, the disease should be diagnosed in its infancy.
The best way to treat this disease in its chronic phase is to treat it with imatinib, a drug that is also used to treat many forms of cancer. This drug targets the abnormalities which are created by this disease, removing them and helping to cure a person who has chronic myelogenous leukemia. Bone marrow transplants are also commonly used, but treatment with imatinib is often used first as it is more cost effective and safe. If all the symptoms of the disease occur at one time in a blast crisis, treatment is much more difficult as the disease has a very high mortality rate. The only effective treatment to blast crisis Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia is an immediate bone marrow transplant.
